The End.

I just finished Brave Girl Eating...it's hard to really say anything without giving too much away. The conclusion of the book is almost anticlimactic. That was my initial thought. However, I didn't feel as though it didn't finish, or wasn't worth it, or anything of the sort. The end being anticlimactic drove home the point that the battle against anorexia never really ends. There really was no other way to finish the book. Kitty couldn't just all of a sudden be recovered completely. There's not a definitive happy-ending moment. I don't want to give too much away but I definitely recommend this book!

  1. Thanks for saving the plot spoilers. Here's a question--did Brown do it well? Even if the plot live was expected, did it get told effectively? And, if so, how did the author maintain that? If not, where did her authorial power let down at the end?

  2. She does it very well! Her tone changes toward the end of the book... she becomes more accepting and calm about her situation: no longer frantic or angry, but definitely still concerned (for lack of a more emphatic word). While Brown was brave to begin with, challenging her daughter's eating disorder with gusto, the end reflects a more stoic attitude. Brown has accepted that anorexia isn't just something you can zap, or take a pill for; it's going to be a long and arduous road, but she is prepared to take it.
